Communal violence erupted in Nagpur on Monday, March 17. During a press conference held on March 20, community leaders urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to engage with representatives from both communities to foster peace and understanding
Congress leader Pawan Khera has voiced significant concern regarding the recent violence in Nagpur, describing the situation as profoundly alarming. He pointed out that Nagpur, a city with a rich 300-year history, has never witnessed such riots before, raising questions about how unrest could erupt in a place renowned for its communal harmony.
Khera’s remarks come in the wake of disturbing reports about riots in Nagpur, particularly in the Mahal area, which is known to be the chief minister’s own constituency. He emphasized that throughout its dynamic existence, Nagpur has maintained a reputation for peace and unity. However, he noted that recent events seem to be an attempt to weaponize the city’s historical legacy to create divisions and distractions among its residents.
Khera stated, “These clashes expose the real face of the ideology of the ruling regime—both at the Centre and in the state,” highlighting his belief that the violence reflects deeper ideological issues within the current administration.
In his criticism of the ruling government, Khera suggested that the violence serves to reveal the true nature of their ideology. He accused certain political parties of intentionally provoking tensions for their own political gain, urging citizens to remain vigilant and not fall prey to these divisive tactics. He called for a collective prioritization of peace and harmony among the people of Nagpur.
Khera also raised concerns about the government’s responsibility in managing the situation, particularly questioning the preparedness of law enforcement during protests organized by groups such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal. These groups had been demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Khuldabad, Maharashtra. Khera asked whether adequate measures were in place to maintain law and order during such demonstrations, suggesting that the government may have failed in its duty to protect the peace.
The violent clashes in central Nagpur erupted on a chaotic Monday night, following protests by Hindu nationalist groups. These protests escalated into unrest that resulted in injuries to several police officers and extensive property damage. Reports indicate that a hail of stones was thrown at police officers, ignited by swirling rumors and misinformation.
In response to the escalating violence, police personnel resorted to tear gas and baton charges to disperse the unruly crowds that were wreaking havoc in areas like Chitnis Park and Mahal. However, the turbulence quickly spread to other neighborhoods, including Kotwali and Ganeshpeth, as the police struggled to control mobs that numbered in the thousands.
The unrest was reportedly sparked by rumors that a sacred religious text had been desecrated during the protest, further inflaming tensions. In response to the situation, law enforcement from Nagpur’s rural regions was called in to assist, while the cyber division worked to combat the spread of misinformation that was fueling the unrest.
The violence resulted in significant property damage, with approximately 40 vehicles, including two earthmovers and several police vans, being set ablaze. The Maharashtra chief minister’s office acknowledged the challenges faced by authorities in managing the unrest, particularly in the Mahal district.
In a statement, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged the public to stand united with the government during this tumultuous time. He emphasized the importance of maintaining close communication with law enforcement and called on residents to support the officials working to restore order. “Nagpur has long been a beacon of harmony and unity—this is its legacy,” he stated, imploring everyone to dismiss false narratives and rally behind the authorities to ensure peace is restored in the city.
