Allahbadia Row: NCW Seeks Prompt Action To Curb Lewd Online Content

Feb 11, 2025 | Pratirodh Bureau

Ranveer Allahabadia's remarks about parents and sex on a reality show have sparked widespread outrage. In response, the National Commission for Women has urged the government to take action against what they see as increasing "obscene content" on streaming platforms and social media

A controversy has erupted over comments made by influencer Ranveer ‘Beer Biceps’ Allahbadia on a reality show. His remarks about parents and sex sparked outrage. In response, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has urged the government to take action against what they see as increasing “obscene content” on streaming platforms and social media.

The NCW chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, wrote a letter to the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw. She asked for immediate guidelines to prevent platforms from allowing inappropriate or obscene content. The NCW believes that such content is harmful, especially to women and children.

Allahbadia, who has nearly 16 million followers, apologized after the backlash. He stated that comedy is not his strong suit. His comments were made during a YouTube reality show called “India’s Got Latent,” hosted by comedian Samay Raina. This show is known for its edgy humor, often referred to as ‘dank comedy.’

Dhruv Rathee, a well-known social media influencer, also expressed his disapproval. He criticized the use of vulgar language in comedy, calling it “pure nonsense.” In a post on X, he stated that he has never used abusive language in his own videos. He believes that the current trend in comedy aims to shock audiences for views, which negatively affects the moral development of young people.

The NCW is concerned about the easy access to such content for people of all ages. They highlighted that this type of material can have a damaging impact on society. It can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and threaten the safety and dignity of women and children.

The commission pointed out that this content violates several laws. These include the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Information Technology (IT) Act. The NCW believes that strict action is needed to protect the public from harmful material.

In their statement, the NCW called for stronger censorship and content moderation systems. They want to ensure that platforms do not stream or allow users to upload inappropriate content. The commission emphasized that the safety and dignity of women must be a priority on all digital platforms.

The NCW has requested that the ministry inform them about any actions taken. This will help ensure that the issue is addressed quickly. The chairperson reiterated the importance of protecting the well-being of women and children in the digital space.

In summary, the NCW is taking a stand against obscene content on social media and streaming platforms. They are calling for immediate action from the government to create guidelines that will protect users, especially vulnerable groups like women and children. The recent controversy surrounding Ranveer Allahbadia has highlighted the need for stricter regulations in the digital world.
