Mallikarjun Kharge, who is the current Congress president, on Sunday asked party leaders to set aside personal differences and take on adversaries with full might in the upcoming Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. He also stressed on unity and organisational discipline.
On the second day of deliberations, while addressing the extended CWC meeting, he said the party’s goal must be to work diligently to form an alternative government in the country and to defeat the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Kharge — in a scathing attack on the Modi government — accused the Modi government of playing politics and distracting and diverting people’s attentions from basic issues by bringing in new ones. Kharge said Congress party leaders should stay away from such distractions and continue to remain focused on real issues.
Kharge said, “The Modi government formed a committee on ‘One Nation, One Election’ during the Mumbai meeting of the INDIA alliance recently. It also included a former President to fulfil its agenda, in contraventions of all conventions.”
He called for party members remaining connected with voters and countering the false narrative of the adversaries with facts. He added that the entire country was awaiting the message from this meeting in Hyderabad.
Kharge said that Congress-led governments in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh have “pioneered a new model of social justice and welfarism” and urged party leaders to publicise these welfare schemes across the country. He said that the common people are looking for an alternative and the party’s victories in Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka elections are proof of this.
“Our goal must be to work diligently to form an alternative government in the country and defeating the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections,” Kharge stressed.
While taking note of the challenges that lie ahead, Kharge said these challenges aren’t just limited to the Congress party; they also concern the preservation of the Indian Constitution and the survival of Indian democracy. He said one of the major challenges is to save the rights of SC/ST/OBCs, women, poor and minorities.
Kharge claimed that the Congress party had laid the foundation of democracy in the country and that’s why the onus of protecting it and the Constitution is also on the party.
“The Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) refuses to address the concerns of the poor, farmers, labourers, women, and youth; instead, he cannot look beyond himself. This is not the time for us to rest. In the last 10 years under BJP rule, the challenges faced by ordinary people have multiplied,” the Congress president alleged. “In such circumstances, we cannot remain mute spectators,” Kharge added.
Kharge urged that leaders should be united in order to overthrow “this dictatorial government” and in order to save democracy in the country. “We must take care that we should not do anything our of our ego that might hurt the party’s interests,” he said, while adding that there are ups and downs in everyone’s life.
Kharge said that in the year 2024 — which marks the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s election as the Congress president — the most fitting tribute to the father of the nation would be to oust the BJP from power in 2024.
He said, “We leave Hyderabad today with a firm commitment: to win not only in Telangana but in all upcoming elections, relieving people from miseries of the BJP’s misrule,” he said.
