SC issues notice on Kazmi’s bail plea

Sep 8, 2012 | Pratirodh Bureau
The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice on a petition by journalist Syed Mohammed Ahmed Kazmi seeking bail in the case of his alleged involvement in Israeli embassy vehicle blast case in which an Israeli national was injured.

A bench of Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice J.Chelameswar issued notice to the central government, the Delhi government and the attorney General following a brief mentioning by Kazmi\\\’s counsel Mehmood Pracha.

“We submitted a special leave petition to the Supreme Court around 10 days ago. We were not given a hearing at the sessions court or the High Court. The apex court will now hear our bail plea on September 14. On the same day, it will also decide on our special leave petition,” Kazmi’s counsel Mahmood Paracha said.

Pracha said that neither the charge sheet has been filed in the case nor there was any application moved by the investigating agency seeking more time for filing the charge sheet.

A person could be held under detention for a maximum of 180 days after which a review board has to look into the case.

The Delhi Union of Journalists, which briefed the media on behalf of Kazmi on Friday, accused the Delhi Police of “biased investigation”.

Kazmi was arrested on March 6 for his alleged role in the Embassy car bombing. Four people were injured when an Israeli Embassy car was struck by a bomb near the Prime Minister\\\’s official residence here on February 13 this year.

S K Pande, president of the journalists’ union, said an independent commission, comprising journalists and retired judges, would be formed to look into the case.
