Sheila Dikshit Dies At 81, Leaders Hail Her Role In Building Delhi

Sheila Dikshit passed away in Delhi on Saturday

Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit died on Saturday at 3:55 pm in Delhi. As soon as her death was confirmed by her secretary, condolences poured in from across the country as leaders hailed Sheila Dikshit for her role in building Delhi in her 15-year tenure as chief minister. She was 81 years old.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered their condolences on the demise of Sheila Dikshit. While President Kovind said that Sheila Dikshit’s 15 years as chief minister was a glorious period, making Delhi what it is today, PM Modi said that she “made a noteworthy contribution to Delhi’s development”.

President Ram Nath Kovind said, “Sad to hear of the passing of Smt Sheila Dikshit, former Chief Minister of Delhi and a senior political figure. Her term in office was a period of momentous transformation for the capital for which she will be remembered. Condolences to her family and associates.”

PM Modi said, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Sheila Dikshit Ji. Blessed with a warm and affable personality, she made a noteworthy contribution to Delhi’s development. Condolences to her family and supporters. Om Shanti.”

Asserting that Sheila Dikshit’s demise was a “huge loss” to Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that her contribution to the capital city will always be remembered.

“Just now got to know about the extremely terrible news about the passing away of Mrs Sheila Dikshit ji. It is a huge loss for Delhi and her contribution will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to her family members. May her soul rest in peace,” Arvind Kejriwal said.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, “I am shocked to hear the sudden passing away of Smt Sheila Dixit. In her death, the country has lost a dedicated Congress Leader of the masses. People of Delhi will always remember her contribution to the development of Delhi during her tenure as Chief Minister.”

The three-time chief minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit was admitted to Delhi’s Fortis Escorts Heart Institute at 10:30 am this morning. The hospital, in a statement, said that Sheila Dikshit was brought to the hospital in a critical condition with cardiac arrest. Her condition stabilised temporarily, however, the hospital said, she had another cardiac arrest and “despite all the resuscitative efforts, passed away at 3:55 pm”.
