Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's comment underscores a growing concern about the soaring cost of housing, especially in urban areas
On Thursday, June 26, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised significant concerns regarding the escalating costs of housing, particularly in major urban centers. He emphasized that the rising prices are a pressing issue that affects the everyday lives of citizens. In a message shared on his WhatsApp channel, he urged people to reconsider the narrative surrounding economic indicators, specifically the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He stated, “The next time someone tells you the Gross Domestic Product figures, show them the truth about your domestic budget.”
Gandhi highlighted a media report that revealed a startling statistic: even for the wealthiest 5 percent of urban families in Maharashtra, purchasing a home in Mumbai would require over a century of savings. He reiterated this alarming fact, saying, “Yes, you read it right – and if you don’t believe it, let me repeat it: ‘To buy a house in Mumbai, even the richest five percent of India’s people will have to save 30 percent of their income for 109 years!'” This statement underscores the stark reality faced by many, even those who are considered affluent.
The Congress leader pointed out that this situation is not unique to Mumbai but reflects a broader trend in many large cities across India. He remarked, “This is the condition of most big cities, where you work hard in search of opportunities and success. And, where will so much savings come from?” His words resonate with the struggles of countless individuals who aspire to own a home but find themselves trapped in a cycle of financial strain.
Gandhi further elaborated on the burdens faced by the poor and middle class, stating, “The inheritance of the poor and the middle class is not wealth, but responsibilities.” He highlighted the financial pressures that families endure, including the costs of children’s education, healthcare, and the responsibilities of caring for aging parents. He poignantly noted, “Still, there is a dream in the hearts – ‘one day’ we will have a house of our own!” However, he lamented that for many, this dream feels increasingly unattainable. “But when that ‘one day’ is 109 years away even for the rich, then understand that the poor have been deprived of their right to dreams,” he added.
Gandhi’s message is a call to action, urging society to recognize the fundamental need for affordable housing. He stated, “Every family needs a comfortable four walls and a roof over its head – but unfortunately, it costs more than your entire life’s hard work and savings.” This stark reality highlights the disconnect between economic growth figures and the lived experiences of ordinary citizens.
Rahul Gandhi’s remarks serve as a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by many in the pursuit of a better life. He urged listeners to critically assess the economic narrative presented to them, stating, “The next time someone tells you the Gross Domestic Product figures, show them the truth about your domestic budget – and ask, who is this economy for?” His words challenge us to reflect on the true beneficiaries of economic growth and to advocate for policies that prioritize the needs of all citizens, particularly those struggling to secure basic necessities like housing.
