Supreme Court Stays Felling Of Trees In Mumbai’s Aarey Colony

The Supreme Court has stayed the cutting of trees at the Aarey Colony and asked the administration to release activists who have been arrested in the case. A special bench comprising justices Arun Mishra and Ashok Bhushan said it will have to examine the entire thing and posted the matter for hearing on October 21 before its forest bench.

“Don’t cut anything now,” the bench said.

“If anybody is still under arrest they be released forthwith on furnishing of personal bonds,” the Supreme Court said.

The apex court has set October 21 as the next date of hearing in the case. It has also asked the Union Environment ministry to be made a party to the case.
The felling of trees by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) in Aarey Colony in north Mumbai has been at the centre of a major protest movement by green activists.
