Nagpur Violence: Muslim Community Leaders Seek Impartial Probe

Members of the Muslim community in Nagpur have expressed their condemnation of the recent violence that erupted in the city, calling for an impartial investigation into the events that transpired. They believe that prompt action from law enforcement could have potentially averted the unrest.

During a press conference held on Thursday, March 20, community leaders urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to engage with representatives from both communities to foster peace and understanding.

The violence in Nagpur, which is the largest city in the Vidarbha region, was triggered by widespread rumors regarding the burning of a ‘chadar’ inscribed with holy verses during protests organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). These protests were aimed at advocating for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. The situation escalated on Monday evening, leading to significant incidents of stone pelting and arson across various neighborhoods in the city.

Dr. Mohammad Awes Hasan, a prominent figure in the Muslim community, addressed the press conference, highlighting a pattern of provocation against Muslims over the past few years. He pointed out that certain political figures have repeatedly brought up the topic of Aurangzeb, despite the Muslim community’s disconnection from the historical figure. Dr. Hasan emphasized that the community has remained largely peaceful and calm in the face of such provocations.

He further alleged that right-wing groups were responsible for the burning of the ‘chadar’ with Islamic verses, which incited anger among community members. When the police failed to take immediate action against those responsible, tensions escalated, leading to the violent outburst. While some community leaders acknowledged the police’s efforts to restore order, they also raised concerns about the arrest of innocent individuals during the investigation into the violence.

In response to the unrest, Pyare Khan, the chief of the Maharashtra State Minorities Commission, convened a meeting that included the police commissioner and the district collector, among other officials. During this meeting, Khan urged law enforcement to refrain from taking action against innocent individuals and called for the relaxation of the curfew imposed in Mominpura and surrounding areas, especially as the holy month of Ramzan was underway, impacting local businesses.

The violence resulted in injuries to thirty-three police personnel, including three officers of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) rank. In the aftermath, police have taken action against Fahim Khan, identified as a key suspect in the violence, along with five others. They face serious charges, including sedition and the dissemination of misinformation on social media platforms.

As the situation in Nagpur continues to develop, community leaders are advocating for dialogue and understanding between different groups to prevent further escalation of tensions. The call for peace and cooperation is seen as essential in restoring harmony in a city that has recently experienced significant unrest.

The lifting or relaxation of the curfew in various parts of Nagpur three days after the violence indicates a move towards normalcy, but the community remains vigilant and hopeful for a resolution that respects the rights and dignity of all involved.
