On June 11, Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, reviewed the 11-year tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s NDA government, accusing him of committing “33 mistakes” during this period. Kharge expressed his discontent, stating, “I have never seen a prime minister who lies so much, who traps people, and deceives the youth.”
Reflecting on his extensive political experience, Kharge remarked, “I have been in power for 55 years and in politics for 65 years — there has been no one like him.” He emphasized that the Prime Minister’s actions have consistently misled the public, particularly the youth and the poor, to secure votes.
In a press conference held in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, Kharge criticized Modi’s failure to deliver on promises, asserting, “The PM lies for everything and does not implement anything that he says he will do.” He pointed out that when confronted about his unfulfilled promises, Modi often lacks answers.
Kharge highlighted several key issues, including demonetization, employment generation, and the Minimum Support Price (MSP), stating, “There are many such things.” He lamented that Modi has never acknowledged his mistakes or apologized for misleading the public, adding, “He keeps on saying things one after the other, and it has been 11 years now.”
As the Modi government celebrated its first anniversary in its third term on June 9, 2024, Kharge’s remarks serve as a stark reminder of the criticisms faced by the Prime Minister. The Congress leader’s statements reflect a growing discontent among opposition parties regarding the government’s performance over the past decade.
Meanwhile, the Congress party criticized the central government’s management of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), alleging that the administration is working on “how to kill MGNREGA in three easy steps.” Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, shared a media report on X, highlighting that for the first time, the government has capped spending under MGNREGA at 60 percent of its annual allocation for the first half of the financial year 2025–26.
Ramesh outlined the three steps in a post, stating,
“Step I: Starve MGNREGA of funds for a decade, resulting in stagnant wages and a massive rise in pending dues — amounting to Rs. 21,000 crores as of the beginning of this financial year.”
He continued, “Step II: Introduce the Finance Ministry’s Monthly/Quarterly Expenditure Plan, restricting MGNREGA expenditure in the first six months of the financial year to 60 percent of the annual budget.”
He warned, “Step III: Effectively stop providing work to MGNREGA beneficiaries due to budget shortfall after payment of pending dues.” Ramesh concluded, “Step I and II are in motion. Step III is coming soon.”
In his post, Ramesh emphasized the need for reform, arguing that “MGNREGA wages must be increased to Rs 400 per day.” He also insisted that the Aadhaar Based Payment Bridge Systems (ABPS) should not be made mandatory, stating, “Wages must be paid within the statutory period of 15 days, and any delay in payment must be compensated.” His comments reflect a growing concern within the Congress party regarding the future of MGNREGA and the welfare of its beneficiaries.
