‘Insensitivity Towards Poor, Arrogance’: Rahul Slams BJP Over Demolitions

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has expressed deep concern regarding the plight of slum dwellers in Delhi who are facing homelessness due to the demolition of their homes by the BJP government. He described this situation as a painful atrocity that highlights the ruling party’s insensitivity towards the poor and its arrogance arising from being in power.

In a heartfelt post on X, Gandhi shared a video from his recent visit to the Ashok Vihar area, where he witnessed firsthand the destruction of homes belonging to several families. He stated, “Imagine, how would you feel if the roof over the head of your parents, children, or siblings is suddenly taken away? If your entire family is rendered homeless in a single moment?” He emphasized that “hundreds of poor families living in the jhuggis of Delhi are going through this pain today.”

Gandhi lamented the loss of not just physical structures but the dreams and dignity of the families affected. “These were not just houses; these were their dreams, their dignity, and their means of living,” he remarked, underscoring the emotional and psychological toll of such demolitions.

He condemned the actions of the government, stating, “This atrocity being committed in the name of administration exposes the BJP’s insensitivity towards the poor and its arrogance of power.” His words resonated with the displaced families, as he assured them of his unwavering support. “We stand firmly with these displaced families. This fight is no longer just for homes; it is for justice and humanity—and we will fight on every front,” he declared, reinforcing his commitment to advocate for their rights.

Last week, Gandhi had met with families in Ashok Vihar’s Jailorwala Bagh and Wazirpur, whose homes were “bulldozed by the BJP government of Delhi.” In the video shared, he is seen interacting with the affected families, offering them hope and promising to take up their cause. “I will provide legal assistance to ensure that your voices are heard,” he assured them, highlighting the importance of legal recourse in their struggle.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had recently conducted an anti-encroachment drive in West Delhi’s Ashok Vihar, resulting in the demolition of over 300 illegal dwellings. This operation was met with heavy police and paramilitary presence, indicating the government’s determination to clear unauthorized settlements. A total of 308 illegal dwellings were removed from the Jailorwala Bagh area as part of the DDA’s efforts.

According to the DDA, the action targeted jhuggi structures belonging to residents who had either been allotted alternative flats or were deemed ineligible under the rehabilitation policy. This justification, however, has not alleviated the suffering of those affected. Many families are left without shelter, grappling with the harsh realities of displacement.

Gandhi’s visit and his vocal support for the displaced families have sparked discussions about the government’s approach to housing and urban development. Critics argue that the demolitions reflect a broader trend of neglect towards marginalized communities, while supporters of the government maintain that such actions are necessary for urban planning and development.
